White-breasted Nuthatch

Sitta carolinensis

The birdfeeders are back up for the winter! I am posting the most interesting photos only. Interesting to me for many reasons: composition, behaviors, insights into a species . . . we'll see what comes up. I am looking forward to the winter now!

I've got to get those tiny branches off the tree that are interfering with my shots.

Notice the rufus colored skirt under the nuthatch.

I also need to space the feeders better so they don't impinge on shots.

Odd Shots: White-breasted Nuthatch

A white-breasted nuthatch finds something to eat in my bird tree, which, as you can see, has been throughly checked out by the woodpeckers. I hope this is odd enough. I had never seen a nuthatch dig something out of the tree before (the bark was flying but I missed those shots). When clicked, these photos will open, full size, in a new window. White-breasted Nuthatch

Nuthatches climb down trees headfirst.

The white-breasted nuthatch is the most familiar species of nuthatches.

These middle two photos were, for me, more comical, so I posted them.
You can see the chestnut color on its belly here.

The nuthatch stays on or close to the ground while it visits me.
I have not seen it go to the feeder. It stays underneath or on the tree.
