Quarreling Hairy Woodpeckers

Male hairy woodpeckers (Picoides villosus)

One day during Christmas week, I was watching the woodpeckers in the bird tree as they postured by hopping sideways with their necks extended. In short, they were behaving very aggressively towards each other. They were trying to keep each other from the suet feeders on the tree. I have chosen only four photographs for this post of the many that I got of their squabble. They did fly at each other but never truly attacked each other, thank goodness. Since that day I have now seen female woodpeckers have less violent confrontations about the suet feeders.

Sky Watch Friday: Snow and The Woodpecker

I haven't taken too many photos this week until today. I have had serious car problems and to fix the car, I can't buy my camera this spring. And I am, frankly, tired of taking landscapes while the snow if falling and blowing. I took this photo of this female hairy woodpecker this afternoon after school and it makes me smile. The woodpeckers are flirting brazenly in the tree this week (and the girl woodpeckers are carrying on in a nearly embarrassing fashion). They are a joy to watch. We are having a heavy snowfall this afternoon and tonight.

Hairy Not Downy

This female hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus) found peanuts that the squirrels had hidden in a knot in the bird feeder tree. I made this collage in Photoshop Elements and I am not happy with the results. The photos go in order from left to right, top to bottom. I took these today.

When my digital photography instructor saw my "downy woodpecker" photos, he told me, and another birder student confirmed, that all of my woodpeckers are hairys and not downys. My woodpeckers are a smidgin bigger than a robin. Downys are apparently the size of nuthatches.
