Two Spiders

Camera Critters: Swimming Salamanders

Please forgive my indulgence for posting six photos. But I love these gentle creatures. These red-spotted salamanders (or newts?) were captured during the fifth and sixth grade aquatic insect and crustacean expedition (other creatures can be seen here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here — whew!). After the tramping, I sat with my Canon and experimented photographing into aquariums that held the specimens. I think the salamanders look so dinosaur-like when they swim. It's A Calopterygidae!

Do you remember this bug from the aquatic insect and crustacean expedition? It's been identified by John & Jane Balaban at bugguide.net as Calopterygidae — the larva of a broad-winged damselfly. I have played liberally with the white balance in order to display features of the larva. The full-size photos will open in a new window when clicked. Ground Pine It's Field Horsetail

Genus Lycopodium

Club moss of the northern hardwood forests — not a pine, not a tree, not a moss. It's a type of fern: "evergreen, perennial, clonal, and rhizomatous in nature." I'll be keeping an eye on this important inhabitant of my forest during the summer. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.

I went on an Edible Wilds walk in Montpelier Saturday and learned that I mislabeled this plant. This is the sterile horsetail. The fertile horsetail can be seen here. I apologize for the error.

Unidentified Bug

The red on the boy's hand is from magic marker, not blood! We thought this was a cranefly but it isn't. I will try to have an identification later. I enjoy seeing the way it was walking on the boy's hand. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window. This was shot with my Canon Rebel and I'm still not used to the different type of focus so some parts are fuzzy.

Salamander

A salamander collected in a pond on the aquatic animal expedition that the fifth and sixth grades had this week. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window. The kids gave me all sorts of names for this salamander. I will update with the correct name tomorrow.

Crayfish

I am suffering major computer problems. Major technology problems with cameras and computers. I can't do ABC Wednesday today but will tomorrow, when I tag and post more. Camera Critters: Three Frogs on Green Up Day

Besides the flower photos, I found these three frogs in a very small pond on the trail during our Green Up Day activity at school. Love taking frog photos: they're fun. The kids also pointed out the frog egg mass in the pond. It's not much of a photo (the last one here) but here it is.
