A Sinking Bobhouse

We drove by Webster Lake in Franklin, New Hampshire before the storm that never ended last week. By law, fishing shacks on lakes have to be brought in by April 1. But this year the lakes are thawing much earlier and many of the shacks (or bobhouses as they are called here) are sinking. The state has issued warnings and now say they will help you bring your bobhouse in if it is in danger of sinking. Many people and vehicles have fallen into lakes this year.

Bob Houses on Mascoma Lake

Carr Mountain and Rattlesnake Mountains can be seen in the distance.
In Vermont we call bob houses ice shacks or fishing shacks.

Mount Hor

Mount Hor is on the west side of Willoughby Lake. When you climb to the ridge and look west you can see country that is seldom seen in the valley because it is wild and mountainous. The ice fishing is still going on until the last weekend of March. The lake was crowded with trucks, cars and people.

Ice Fishing on Crystal Lake

I met a gentleman and his dog at Crystal Lake. He was going to climb the icy cliffs with only crampons and an ice pick. No ropes. His dog enjoyed eating the discarded bait from the ice shacks. The wind was bitterly cold. The man told me that he does this once a day no matter what the weather.

I walked out onto the lake with them, past the ice shacks and looked back at the shore and took this photo. We were at the tail end of our latest big snow storm (18 inches).
