New Haven: Rugosa

City Point Rugosa-2.jpg
Rosa rugosa

Also called wrinkled rose, tomato rose, beach tomato, sea tomato, saltspray rose and beach rose. The USDA fact sheet on rugosa:

Uses
Traditionally used for its beautification qualities, rugosa rose’s value as an erosion control type plant has recently expanded to include sand dune stabilization.  Its ability to withstand salt spray makes it a good choice to plant on sand dunes and roadsides.  With its thorny stems, this shrub can be strategically established at locations to direct pedestrians between the sand dunes.  The ripe fruits (hips) this plant produces are high in vitamin C, and can be made into teas, jams and jellies.  To a lesser degree, this species offers some food and cover to deer, and small birds and mammals.

Status
Please consult the PLANTS Web site and your State Department of Natural Resources for this plant’s current status (e.g. threatened or endangered species, state noxious status, and wetland indicator values).

Invasiveness
This plant is considered noxious in some states.  This plant may be invasive in some regions or habitats and may displace desirable vegetation if not properly managed.  Please consult with your local NRCS Field Office, Cooperative Extension Service office, or state natural resource or agriculture department regarding its status and use.  Invasive information is also available from the PLANTS Web site at plants.usda.gov.

PhotoHunt: Spiral

This cropped photo is from my just completed Spiral Project on my meeyauw blog. The posts can be seen here and here. This was a fun mathematics project defining, identifying and creating spirals. This is a photo of a bolt used in a highway construction project in New Haven, Connecticut. The spiral on the bolt creates a helix and allows the bolt to screw down into another object.

SkyWatch Friday: New Haven's Green Monk Parrots

We went to New Haven, Connecticut to visit my oldest daughter last weekend. She lives on Long Island Sound where long ago some green monk parrots got loose and settled in to live. They are beloved by most of the population and it is now illegal to harm the birds. Their nests cause fires because they like to nest on electrical transformers. They are, of course, messy and extremely raucus. And they are "invasive." But they are protected.

These are the best photographs I have ever been able to take of the birds. I stand on Anna's second story porch in the early morning. The birds sleep rather late, so the light was good. On this morning, one parrot flew in with a large stick and tried to enter a nest with it. The bird was beaten back rather violently by another. The arguement lasted about an hour.

Please forgive me posting so many photos of these birds. I am proud of the results and couldn't decide which of these photos to not post. I also wanted the photos as large as possible so I am sure that this page will take a long time to load.

Macro Monday: Rose Hips in New Haven

We were in New Haven this past weekend visiting my daughter, Anna, at City Point. It was so warm that we didn't have to wear jackets or boots! John and I took a walk at New Haven Harbor like we always do, and I photographed these rose hips from last summer. There were no flowers yet, which was disappointing. But New Haven is a photographic heaven for nature photography and urban photography.

Light House Point, New Haven

As I look out my window in Vermont today, there is a whiteout with the high winds and heavy snowfall. The temperature hovers around 10°F (-12°C) and the windchill is at -13°F (-25°C). This photo is from a wonderful and warm day in October in New Haven, Connecticut when I visited my daughter, Anna. She is in this photo, with her dog Daisy, at the lighthouse at Lighthouse Point Park. But I love the snow so I'll stay here. I just miss being with Anna.

Sky Watch Friday: New Haven Harbor Sunset

New Haven Harbor at City Point, New Haven, Connecticut
I'm down here visiting Anna and Aaron who live a few dozen yards from Long Island Sound on New Haven Harbor. I took Daisy, their dog, for a walk down to the pier this evening and took some shots of the sunset.

Green Monk Parrot

Also called Quaker parrots. They live wild in my daughter's neighborhood in New Haven, Connecticut. I was going through my photos and realized I had not posted this back when I visited her in October. It has been difficult for me to capture them in the camera because they hide in the foliage of the trees. I don't like the flash in the bird's eye. You can read about the problems the electrical company is having with the parrots here (they like to nest on transformers, as they are doing in front of Anna's house).

Metaphor

My children, Andrew and Anna (with Daisy) walk down South Water Street in City Point, New Haven. Andrew unexpectedly showed up yesterday in order to attend something at Yale.

I am going home today, sick. I have a cold that I think I caught in Vermont but it blossomed here. I feel awful and I want to be in my own bed. But I will miss these two desperately in the coming week until I again adjust to them being far from me.
