The brooks behind the house are open now and are happily splashing through the leftover snow.

White Birch Bud

The same bud two weeks later (click here to see the image from two weeks ago). There doesn't seem to be much different in the bud in the photograph but I felt a difference as I photographed it. Perhaps it was the warm weather today. By the way, I misidentified the earlier photograph but I have corrected the identification.

Ice Cliffs on I-91

School was canceled on Wednesday, March 11 because we had a small ice storm. Later in the day, Matt and I went to St. Johnsbury to run some errands and do some shopping. On the way home on Interestate 91 northbound, we stopped to photograph the ice cliffs. One of the signs of spring (ironically) are these beautiful sheets of ice on the rock cuts on the roads. Below is a section of the ice that you see above.

Camera Critters: Frisky Horses

My neighbor's horses were feeling frisky in the spring air a week ago. This was a good attempt with my new Canon Rebel with action shots. I probably should have used the sports setting but wasn't thinking. When clicked, these photos will open, full size, in a new window.

Thank you so much for visiting!

Common Snipe Video

I have never posted a video on this blog before. But the common snipe has some habits that deserve to be seen. Photographs will be coming this week, so be sure to come back. And for Sky Watch Friday I have a very, very special photo that I took today (not a snipe)! Anyhow, now that spring is here, all sorts of animals are appearing again. The snipe was here in the yard all day on Sunday and I took about a hundred photos of him! I hope you enjoy this three minute silent video (he made no sound at all). Every summer there are at least two snipes at opposite ends of the beaver bog. They talk to each other all day long. I am so glad they are back.

Signs of Spring: Geese in Beaver Bog

Photos are at full 10x zoom
My pair of nesting Canada geese are back!
(That link takes you to lots of info on my other blog.)

They have been here at least 24 hours, so I am pretty sure this is them.

The golden grass you see here is a hummock of the type that they will eventually nest on.
It will remain above water, giving them great views of incoming predators.
Mom will brood the eggs and Dad will cruise the waters, ever watchful of sneak attacks.

One Single Impression: Stranded

When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.

Earth and water fuse
As frost leaves the ground —
Cars sunk in mud are stranded

Mud season has started. This is a view of a portion of my driveway late this morning. If you visited earlier, I had a different photo (same poem). This is more appropriate.
