SkyWatch Friday 4.52: Burton Hill Cell Tower

Verizon cell tower on Burton Hill Road
After years of conroversy and hearings, a cell tower was finally placed here on the silo on Burton Hill Road.  My recollection of the hearings is that Verizon was very sensitive to the concerns of Barton citizens and placed it here with the consent of everyone. I read in the paper that AT&T wants to raise the height on the tower on Barton Mountain behind us. I expect there will be a lot of talking — if not hollering — about that. I only hope that AT&T is as sensitive as Verizon.

Thank you for visiting!

Fireworks!

They did fireworks from Crystal Lake this year, which meant that I could stay home and photograph them from our bedroom window with my 250mm lens. I watched a YouTube video for my camera settings (Camera: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi; Exposure: 2 sec; Aperture: f/14.0; Focal Length: 250 mm; ISO Speed: 400), set up the tripod and was ready to go. I was supposed to use manual focus and set it on infinity, but there is no such setting on my 250mm lens so I used autofocus. I also forgot to set ISO to 100 and white balance to daylight. There were not as many fireworks this year, but it was good enough for me. After looking at professional photos of fireworks, I feel that these are very squiggly, but I'm satisfied. Next year I'll do better!

Home Again

Our home can be partially seen on the right. This photo was taken from a hill behind the house. In the far distance you can see the Lowell Range of the Green Mountains. The beaver ponds are across the road. Also in the distance you can see the historic Duquette Barn down the road. It's wonderful to be home again and seeing the sights that are so dear and familiar.

Peeking Chickens

When we drive into the yard, the chickens peek out of the barn to see who has come to visit!

More Oyster Mushrooms

While I was re-organizing my Flickr mushroom sets, we found that I had misidentified these photos. These are oyster mushrooms. We found these freeze dried on sugar maple trees in Barton, VT during sugaring time. In Japan these are called hira-take mushrooms. Since they are so well dried, we ground them up to put in casseroles, stews, sauces, and gravies. They look quite different than the fresh oyster mushrooms we have been collecting and eating.

Barton Trail Derailment Slideshow

Green Mountain Railroad Derailment

On the afternoon of Thursday, May 21, 2009, the Green Mountain Railroad train that goes through Barton daily, derailed. The train ended up blocking the intersection of Rt. 5 and Rt 16. I have put some of my favorite photos from this here. The details are on the main blog, here. Above you see the wheel on the third car that derailed and exploded dozens of ties as it rolled over them. The asphalt of Rt. 16 (the road on which I live) was also destroyed.

Above, our special Matt mimes running ahead of a runaway train. The train, of course, had stopped because it had jumped the track.

The scene from E.M. Brown store on Rt. 5.

Two Young Does

As J and I drove home from Charleston yesterday afternoon, J pointed out these two one- or two-year old does in a pasture in Barton. He steered as I carefully shot the pair through the windshield and open window. Jay Peak is in the background and the emerging thatch is in the foreground.

Ice Fishing on Crystal Lake

I met a gentleman and his dog at Crystal Lake. He was going to climb the icy cliffs with only crampons and an ice pick. No ropes. His dog enjoyed eating the discarded bait from the ice shacks. The wind was bitterly cold. The man told me that he does this once a day no matter what the weather.

I walked out onto the lake with them, past the ice shacks and looked back at the shore and took this photo. We were at the tail end of our latest big snow storm (18 inches).

View of Jay Peak from Barton

Jay Peak is the hooked summit far in the background. In real life it is closer but I liked the depth of the sky here. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.

Wingnut counts his paces to reach the treasure box.

Three young deciduous trees (maples) mentioned in the clues.

The treasure box should have been under this tree. But it wasn't.

Wingnut had taken photos of the musk mallows in the grocery store parking lot.

We ended our quest with creamees at the Pharmacy.

For details about this photowalk please click here.

When clicked, thess photos will open, full size, in a new window.
