Tractor Chicken Again

The weather has been hot and I've been busy working, gardening, and doing chores. Just plain enjoying life but not blogging. I should be blogging because I am now two months behind posting my photographs. This photo was taken July 1 when the Barton road crew installed our driveway culvert. They had a huge tractor to dig the ditch, and we know how Tractor Chicken can't ignore tractors. She brought her sisters on this day. The men and I chased the chickens away so they wouldn't get hurt. I managed to get this shot when they were running away. As always, Tractor Chicken was unhurt and got quite a few grubs and worms.

Running Chicken

The chickens saw daughter Amelia enter the barn. That means food! So they began running for her across the yard. I managed to get this action shot but I don't know how I did it! I guess I'll have to go out and chase them around, get them running, and try again!

Zorro and the Chickens

Zorro walks by the chickens who are ruining our day lily garden. The cat enjoys stalking the chickens and startling them, but never tries to catch them. He did the same thing with wild turkeys in New Hampshire. The chickens enjoy having their dust baths in amongst the lilies. They then nibble the lilies after their baths. The lilies are not doing well and we are not pleased. I love this photo because of the look on the cat's face.

Roosting in the Old Apple Tree

As I was leaving the house one day, I saw that some of the hens were roosting in the old apple tree by the driveway. In the October 2005 blizzard this tree was partially uprooted. We have trimmed some of the worst damage and the tree still produces. The chickens enjoy sitting in it because it is low to the ground. In the wild, chickens will roost overnight in trees just like wild turkeys do.
