Zorro and the Chickens

Zorro walks by the chickens who are ruining our day lily garden. The cat enjoys stalking the chickens and startling them, but never tries to catch them. He did the same thing with wild turkeys in New Hampshire. The chickens enjoy having their dust baths in amongst the lilies. They then nibble the lilies after their baths. The lilies are not doing well and we are not pleased. I love this photo because of the look on the cat's face.

My New Subaru

I bought a new car on Tuesday — a 2005 Subaru Outback with 53,000 miles. My Saturn wagon was 9 years old, had 165,000 miles, was falling apart, was unsafe in winter and was costing too much in repairs. I am just thrilled. I never thought I would be able to afford one of these Subarus. This used car is as good as new. I called the dealership on Monday and they got the financing ready. I walked in Tuesday, selected the car and in an hour I drove home. The total time to pick it out and to sign papers: 3 hours. What a difference from a week of agony and waiting years ago!

This wire kitty, named after my Frankie cat from long ago, was unglued from the dash of my old car and re-glued onto the dash of the Subaru. What a great team at St. Jay Auto! From financing to servicing, this was actually an almost pleasant experience.

"SUBARU" is a Japanese word meaning "unite", as well as a term identifying a cluster of six stars, which the Greeks called the Pleiades - part of the Taurus constellation.
According to Greek mythology, Atlas' daughters turned into this group of stars. In 1953, five Japanese companies merged to form Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. The new corporation adopted the "Subaru" cluster of stars as the official logo for its line of automobiles.
Besides the Big and Little Dippers, the Pleiades is the only constellation I have ever been able to identify in the sky. I have always enjoyed the myth of this constellation. And Subaru has a solid reputation here in the north country — you can get through weather that will stop other cars cold.

Swamp Dewberry (Bristly Dewberry)

Rubus hispidus
Rose family; native
Photos taken after many days of rain so that the blossoms are bedraggled.

George helps.

"These plants and the related blackberries and raspberries (both in Rubus) are among the most important summer foods for songbirds and game birds as well as for many mammals." When clicked, these photos will open, full size, in a new window.

Mouse's June Bug

This is Mouse, the matriarch of the house (orphaned at 3 weeks and delivered to me in the pocket of a paraprofessional at school in Hartford who knew I would not say "no").

This is a June bug (also called May beetle) that got into the house one night this week. There are zillions of them at night now. They like to fly into your hair. They throw themselves onto the screens, sounding just like the cats when they knock on the screens to come in.

Mouse likes to play with bugs.
Look at that amazing fur on the belly of the bug.

June bug is sorta discombobulated.

Zorro Collage

I used Photoshop Element filters on one photo of Zorro to create this collage. This is my last portrait assignment for the digital photography class that I am auditing.

I have been so busy with the photos, reading assignments, two jobs, a hair appointment and the weather that I have not had time to visit your blogs or respond to your wonderful comments. Please forgive me and be patient. I still have to write a paper for tomorrow night's class. The topic: the Vermont photos of Lewis Hine. Hine began photographing child labor in 1908. The photos were influential in changing child labor laws in this country. His work is featured in the book Counting on Grace by Elizabeth Winthrop.

Photo from Shorpy.com: the 100-year-old photography blog
February 1910. Addie Card, 12 years old, anemic little spinner in North Pownal Cotton Mill, Vermont. Girls in mill say she is ten years. She admitted to me she was twelve; that she started during school vacation and would "stay." Photograph and caption by Lewis Wickes Hine.
Commenter Joe Manning adds: "this was the first Hine photo I researched for my Lewis Hine Project. Addie lived to be 94 years old. See the whole story of my research at www.morningsonmaplestreet.com/addiesearch1.html." I recommend that you visit the site.

Buddy loves to climb trees when you are outside with him. He gets a crazy, wild look in his eyes. He comes down very easily and never gets stuck.
