A Watchful Song Sparrow
This song sparrow was watching the cats and me as we walked in the back field in July. It’s strange how different species of birds inhabit different ends and sides of the field. The sparrows and some finches are almost at the end of the field. The warblers are all around the apple orchard in the woods. But they move their preferred positions as the summer progresses and the vegetation changes. I wish summer were still here.

A Sign of Spring
Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)
A large snow well around the bird tree allowed us to see how much seed and debris the birds had dropped on the ground over the winter. The food attracted this song sparrow this week. This is the first song sparrow I have seen this year and it was exciting. Spring may be coming. But now yet. We got another half foot of snow yesterday, the snow plows are out, and the lakes and ponds are still frozen solid. On the same day I saw this sparrow, I also finally saw the first robin of spring. It was my latest spring robin viewing of my life. I usually see the first robin in the first half of March.

Song Sparrow
Susan and I spent time at the library today identifying this sparrow that I posted on Sunday morning. It is a song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). We identified it using all of the photos that I had taken and carefully comparing details on the bird like the eye ring, the chunk of brown at its throat and the streaked breast. Also, I know song sparrows are here (I have been told there are a lot), so now I need to learn the song. The sparrows are hard to see. They remain in the woods and sometimes fly out to the bog. But mostly they are inside the foliage of the trees.
