A Windy Day for Butterflies

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)-5.jpg
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)

May 27 was extremely windy here. The lilac had bloomed beautifully this year and there were several swallowtails drinking of it. But the wind often grounded them, as it did with this one here. He was not injured, just tossed about. The swallowtails seem to emerge when the lilac does. I haven't seen such a great year for lilacs in quite awhile. I have dozens of photos to share of the life that descended on the bush for a week.

A Tattered Swallowtail

Papilio glaucus

I photographed this Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on the shore of Wheeler Pond when we drove on Wheeler Mountain Road. This was the day that I finally began to understand how to use my new 250mm lens and was able to get detailed macro shots from a distance. That made life easier because butterflies tend to fly away when you are three inches away from them! The butterflies I have photographed this year have been very tattered. I assume this is because I have photographed them towards the end of their short and difficult lives. But they are still beautiful mysteries of nature and fascinate me. Here, the swallowtail is on blackberry blossoms.

Drinking Butterflies

Back in the third week of May we had a heat wave (after two weeks of snow). We finally took the kids to cool off at the beach at Pageant Park on Crystal Lake. The eastern tiger swallowtails are all about in May, and we found dozens drinking water from a damp spot on the beach. I could only manage to get these two photographed, though, because I got too close and scared the rest away. I'll try again next year!
