An American Goldfinch in Winter Plumage

American Goldfinch 010.jpg
Carduelis tristis

Why does this photograph remind me of sad-faced Sophie Dog?

  2. Hi, Anon . . . I had to look chaffinch up and found it is only a European bird. Our North American goldfinches molt twice a year and change color in winter. The non-breeders even have different color than the breeders and males are different than females. This is definitely a goldfinch (I don't know if it is male or female). When they molt again and turn a brilliant yellow we know that spring is here.

    Thank you!
