Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus)
Red squirrels travel open spaces by tunneling under the snow. They are safe from predators under there. Once in a while they pop up through the snow to see what's going on. This little one is on her way to the peanut tree for peanuts and sunflower seeds. In the photo below you can get a feeling for the huge space she traveled to get to the tree.

I am so happy to see this red squirrel cutie-pie! There are tunnels in the snow leading up to the ground under my bird feeder, and I've been wondering who made them. Now I think it is probably a certain red squirrel who comes by quite often, hanging out and eating sunflower seeds that I (and the birds) put on the ground. Very cool! Thank you. :)
