Camera Critters: Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly and Flower Spider

I noticed a tiny spot of blue in the grass near the barn this morning and instead of finding a blue butterfly, I found an Eastern Tailed Blue butterfly being eaten by a flower (or crab) spider.

These spiders wait on flowers and inject victims' heads with venom. They then suck out the body of the butterfly. As I moved blades of grass about to get a better photograph, the spider would drag its dinner further away. You can see that there was clover in the grass. The butterfly and the spider were smaller than the clover.

Next time you walk through the grass, be very careful and look carefully for clues to these dramatic insect activities!
