Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea)

Until I saw this bird in the view finder, I didn't even know it was in the field of sunflowers. And at that moment, I saw my very first indigo bunting. After some research, I found that the vocalizations it was making were alarm calls. It was flitting just below the top of the sunflowers. I'm sorry that I alarmed it but glad that I caught it on my camera.

When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.

  1. Oh wow! That is a great photo! I have never seen a blue bunting and to find it on a yellow sunflower -- great timing! I just sat all afternoon waiting for a visit from a pair of humming birds who decided yesterday that they like my waterfall. (It's only a little one), but one of them deliberately perched under the stream of water and flurried his wings a few times, to make sure he got really wet. I have never seen a humming bird do this before. It has been very hot so maybe that's why. Of course I didn't have my camera with me yesterday and today he didn't stay around long enough. So I'll try again tomorrow.
