I was right: the spider is eating the hornets. I saw something moving on the spider tonight (yes, sickening to watch), grabbed the camera, played with exposures and zoom. The hornets have almost finished repairing the nest. There is one un-eaten wasp hanging below the hornet nest. The spider is still not identified by bugguide.net. I hope they get back to me soon. The nights are very cold and a frost is going to be soon. We'll see what happens then.

Not my idea of a good meal but I'm sure the spider enjoyed. Great photo. :o)
ReplyDeleteVery nice close-up. The spider looks like a common "Barn Spider." And it should pass on with the cold weather.
ReplyDeleteI came to thank you for visiting my blog and for commenting about Mack dog. That was nice to read.
It's been a great year for spiders here in Wimbledon (I think it's because last winter was so warm). Every morning the garden is glistening with spiders webs covered in dew.
ReplyDeletenot fan with spider at all specially with the hornets got bit a year ago cry like a baby hehehe.
ReplyDeleteOooh I hate spiders, are so ugly! Anyway nice photos, good job! See ya ^^
ReplyDeleteGross, but cool. Also cool that you were able to catch it. We have an "interesting" spider here in GA. It makes a zigzag pattern in it's web and has yellow or white marks on its body.
ReplyDeleteI found a icky bug at work today. I'd have taken a pic if I had my camera.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I took some photos of a hornet fighting a spider, too. But, the hornet won! I'm going to post it sometime this week. Great photo!
