Vermont: Home of World's Oldest Communal Ocean Reef
This black floor tile from the Vermont State House is not black marble from Isle La Motte, Vermont. It is black limestone. It has fossils embedded in it. The floor of the State House is made of white and black squares. The white squares are white marble from elsewhere in Vermont. The quarry in Isle La Motte is now closed to stone cutting and is a science lab. Read this article from Smithsonian to learn how Vermont came to be the home of the world's oldest (and largest) communal ocean reef. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.
