Lens Day: Spring Sugaring

Echo Hill Farm, East Craftsbury, Vermont
Vermont Maple Weekend Sugarhouse Open House

Sap Lines

The Sugar House

The Evaporator
The syrup had frozen, which shouldn't happen.
Sugaring so far this season has been slow because of the cold days and nights.
Sap has not yet begun to run fully: it starts and stops.

48 pound barrels to store the syrup in.

Sunday Spire: Barton-Glover Friends and Solid Rock Assembly of God

The Barton-Glover Friends meet every Sunday morning in the basement of the Barton Public Library (above).

Back in December 2007, I featured the former Barton Methodist Church. It had the original slate tiles from 120 years ago which formed a decorative pattern, as seen in the photo above. About 1947, the Methodists joined the Congregationalists and moved out of their church. In 1951 the church was sold to the Full Gospel Congregation. This winter, the Solid Rock Assembly of God had to replace the roof of the steeple with plain asphalt and fiberglass shingles. They plan on selling the old slate tiles to artists. The steeple is now finished. You can see the photos of it below. The congregation could not afford to repair the slate tiles, which would have cost $55,000 to $60,000. I keep wondering, though, if they might have gotten a grant for an historic renovation. It is a shame to lose such an important part of our past.

Newly roofed steeple above and below.

Sky Watch Friday: Snow and The Woodpecker

I haven't taken too many photos this week until today. I have had serious car problems and to fix the car, I can't buy my camera this spring. And I am, frankly, tired of taking landscapes while the snow if falling and blowing. I took this photo of this female hairy woodpecker this afternoon after school and it makes me smile. The woodpeckers are flirting brazenly in the tree this week (and the girl woodpeckers are carrying on in a nearly embarrassing fashion). They are a joy to watch. We are having a heavy snowfall this afternoon and tonight.

Thank you for visiting.

Sky Watch Friday: Good Friday Blizzard

We had blizzard conditions all day today. School was not canceled (nobody seemed to believe it would be this bad) and several cars and a school bus went off the road (everyone was safe). By this afternoon when I drove home, the storm was lifting to the northeast but the weather was still treacherous, which can't be appreciated in any photo I took. This is the peak of Barton Mountain from the northeast. I live on the other side of this peak.

Thank you for visiting.

The Last Day of Winter on Barton Mountain

This is my first genuine panorama made in Photoshop Elements from two photos from the back of my house shot late this afternoon. Spring does not begin until Thursday, but tomorrow and Thursday we are having another snow/freezing rain storm, so I won't be going out for anymore photos until Friday.

Foreground, my lilac bush. Between the lilacs and house are the storm-scarred clotheslines. Little tree to left of house: the bird tree. Across the road: the beaver meadows (Duquette Flats). We still can't use that back door but the snow is now below the bathroom window, but not below the window on the far right.

Pierce Block

Pierce-Barrows Block
(known simply as the Pierce Block)

This building will last well past fifty years because it is huge, occupied, ornate, stylish, and appeals to the people in the area. I wish I could open a book store here (this has been done, unsuccessfully, before). The building was built in 1885. Today it houses the Barton Pharmacy, an antique store owned by my friend Catherine, and a real estate business in the basement. It began its life as a drug store, so life has come full circle for this building. It as also once a huge general store, and has housed a dentist, a millinery, barber, The Orleans County Monitor (a newspaper no longer published) offices, a telephone office, and a “job-fitter.” Today the original soda fountain is busy every day and the Step Back Café, in the pharmacy, is doing a great business. A real estate company is open in the basement. The Nelson Block is on the left of this building. Route 5 is on the right. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.

Nelson Block

I can’t find the date when this was built. But in 1909, a “gentleman’s clothing” store occupied it. Later, two different grocery stores occupied it. 1979: Sanel Auto Parts bought it, which forced The Gallery Restaurant out of the north end of the building. I don’t know whether this building will last another fifty years. It has the beautiful typical architecture of Vermont houses that I love, but can it survive commercialism? One Single Impression: Kindness

Laughing eyes run up to me.
I smile and return the glance.
I doubt I'm seen
As you turn back to snowy pasture.
You run back and laugh with me.
