Sunday Spire: West Glover Congregational Church

Christmas Eve service was held here. For the life of me, I don't know what possessed folks to string electric wires right across the front of the church. When clicked, these photos will open, full size, in a new window.

Self Portrait Sunday: Just Me

In my new bathrobe in front of my MacBook. And no, I will not throw out the ratty robes I have worn. One was Andrew's from high school and one was a gift from Anna. I am very grateful for this new, warm, soft robe. Thank you, Amy. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.

The Flume

The flume we slide down in the summer was frozen but now, this week, has melted. May Brook flows from May Pond through the woods (and at least three beaver dams), down this flume, through two more dams, through the Barton Waterworks and down to Crystal Lake, where water leaves through the outlet and Crystal Lake Falls to the Barton River, which flows north to Lake Memphremagog. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.

Fun With Woodpeckers

The wind was so hard this morning that all the birds had problems flying. At times, the woodpeckers looked like white fluffy blurs.

This female had hopped to this portion of the branch. I had her framed and focused when suddenly she slipped out of sight. She actually hit a patch of ice and slid off the branch. I managed to catch her as she went down.

She quickly recovered and perched here to compose herself. She reminded me of a cat that has fallen and looks all bewildered.

The body stayed still. The head moved so quickly that it was blurry.

Hair Appointment

When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.
If it is school break week, it must be time for a hair appointment. I go up the road a mile then down the Cook Road for a couple miles, into Westmore (you know it is Westmore when the road is paved). And there it is: Golden Touch Hair Salon, where I catch up with the county's gossip news. We don't know why Westmore has paved the road. The salon is near Wheelock Mountain. But in the background you see Bald Mountain.

Above The Brick Kingdom

When I took the photo of the Barton Fire Department, I turned 90° for this view of the factory ruins of the Brick Kingdom. I am on top of Crystal Lake Falls, which powered these factories in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. I have blogged about this area and the trail before and will do so often. You can also see Barton Village below.

Cliffs On The Mountain On Christmas Eve

My barn with the cliffs on the mountain behind it. I have tried for years to get a decent photo of these cliffs but have never succeeded until tonight. The photo below is a zoomed photograph of the area you see above the barn. Thank you for visiting, and Merry Christmas.

The River Road

The dirt River Road on the Missisquoi River, Troy, Vermont

From a website that tries to help other folks understand Vermont roads and directions:
Computer map programs and GPS systems may work great in urban areas but they don't work so well on our serpentine rural Vermont roads. Many of our roads have several names. Some of our roads go in different directions but not at the same intersection. Our physical street addresses, created for 911 purposes, often are not in sequential order. Please consult the directions above and do not rely exclusively on modern technology to find your way.

Barton Academy And Graded School

Built in 1908, the school had "eleven classrooms, a library, a laboratory, and rooms for physical education." It also had a "modern heating system, lavatories, large windows and electric lights." The cost for this building was $42,000. Parents had to sign a form "documenting that their children had studied three hourse on a daily basis." source: A History of Barton Vermont by Darlene Young.

This photo will be was replaced as soon as my MacBook (and software) comes home again because I was able to edit it to a larger size and better color. It is still crooked though. When clicked, this photo will open, full size, in a new window.

Snow Squall

You can't see beyond my barn during this sudden, violent snow squall on Saturday. Squalls can dump snow at a rate of two to three inches (5 cm - 7..6 cm) an hour. High winds often create whiteouts. I felt very content and cozy during this squall because I was home safe and sound. If you wish, you can view all my photos of this squall at my Snow Squall album at my dot mac gallery.

Barton Recycling Center

Off May Farm Road (also called the Dump Road) is the recycling center. We bring glass, metal, plastic, cardboard and newspapers here on Saturday. No hazardous materials until the annual Hazardous Materials Day. The center used to be open only on the first and third Saturdays of each month except in the summer when more hours were required because of the summer people. But after Town Meeting in March it was decided to open it every Saturday.

The area was improved so that the two men who man the center could have shelter from the weather. But it was 5°F (-13.3°C) this morning and they had no protection from that. I ran into a teacher from my school here this morning. We are both excited about the probable snow day we will all have on Monday when a big storm will dump a predicted 14 inches ( 35.6 cm) or more of snow from Sunday night to Monday night.

White-breasted Nuthatch

Nuthatches climb down trees headfirst.

The white-breasted nuthatch is the most familiar species of nuthatches.

These middle two photos were, for me, more comical, so I posted them.
You can see the chestnut color on its belly here.

The nuthatch stays on or close to the ground while it visits me.
I have not seen it go to the feeder. It stays underneath or on the tree.
