I was right: the spider is eating the hornets. I saw something moving on the spider tonight (yes, sickening to watch), grabbed the camera, played with exposures and zoom. The hornets have almost finished repairing the nest. There is one un-eaten wasp hanging below the hornet nest. The spider is still not identified by bugguide.net. I hope they get back to me soon. The nights are very cold and a frost is going to be soon. We'll see what happens then.

This is one of the many white-tailed deer that were here this morning. This one came back and crossed the road hours after the linemen were here. She is not hurt. She is turning to run away from the road. She had been waiting for the others to cross, but a car came and scared her away. No others have been seen all day.

Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea)

Until I saw this bird in the view finder, I didn't even know it was in the field of sunflowers. And at that moment, I saw my very first indigo bunting. After some research, I found that the vocalizations it was making were alarm calls. It was flitting just below the top of the sunflowers. I'm sorry that I alarmed it but glad that I caught it on my camera.

Buddy loves to climb trees when you are outside with him. He gets a crazy, wild look in his eyes. He comes down very easily and never gets stuck.

I saw that the baldfaced hornet nest, which has been growing steadily the past month after shrinking in July rains, fell apart over night. I got this amazing photo of the inside of it.

Ox-eye Daisy (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum)

For Hummie, with thanks. I used all manual settings for this photo and it is better than any of the other shots I took of this blossom with the factory settings. I am beginning to understand. I think the center yellow could be better focused.

I was photographing Haystack Mountain over Long Pond in Westmore when this sandpiper-type bird lit behind me. I managed to get off this one shot before it flew away. We cannot decide which species this is.

While sitting on the stoop, mourning what I thought was the death of my camera, I noticed this very tiny crab spider spinning her web. I grabbed the wet camera and shot away. I got many excellent shots. This one shows the spinneret making the web. The spider was translucent. I had to underexpose all the photos so that I could see her.

Everyone has tiger lily photos but my lillies are special: they just blossomed here on the mountain this past week! I am thrilled. Last year they didn't blossom at all.

Welcome to Photo A Day from meeyauw.

This butterfly or, more likely, moth was on my phlox Sunday, August 5. This photo is blurry but I like the curled antennae. They were not curled when the butterfly was on the flower as seen here.
